WELCOME
TO MY RESEARCH
WEBSITE.
At first I started just getting clear what the differences between the two ways of mending were, to get a better overall view.
STEP 1:
STEP 2:
Afterwards I collected all my broken objects and took a better and deeper look into them, I sorted them into the two different ways of mending.
So I could decide which way and object I would find interesting to mend.
WELCOME
TO MY RESEARCH
WEBSITE.
STEP 1:
STEP 3:
Then it was time for me to pick one of the two ways of mending and choose the object that would speak to me the most on emotional valuable level.
STEP 4:
After choosing the object that I would like to mend, I researched different kind of mending techniques on the internet.
OLD
CLOTHES
Inherited from my grandmother
SWAROVSKI
ELEPHANT
I wore this dress
on my 18th birthday.
I designed this dress at my first internship
I bought this on vacation in Bali.
I bought this shirt for my first date when I was 14 y/o.
This was my favourite t-shirt when I was about
13 y/o.
This was a dress that I got from my sister. I thought it was a bit to tall at first so I made it shorter.
I bought this beach dress on the worst vacation ever in Tunesia.
I got this shirt from my mother and she got it from my grandmother.
I came to the conclusion that I would like to mend my old clothes into something new.
"In developing your mending gesture, tell us a story about your disconnection and the possible new reconnection."
DISCONNECTION:
Too small & not my taste anymore. But also there's too much stories and memories attached to the pieces of clothing to just throw them away.
The pieces of clothing gave me a feeling of security and the feeling that I was free to express myself as a person and grow from that.
Here I tried different kind of ways stitching. I just freestyled and in the end I found the "X way" of stitching and the other ways are
Japanese stitches.
This way of mending is called quilting, the idea is to make a new blanket/pattern from different patches of fabric.
Writing all my thoughts on the clothing as "thank you" to the piece of clothing.
Here I ripped my 18th birthday dress apart, but still remembering the good old days.
Remembering the pieces of clothing
by my personal ideas and feelings so that I can peacefully say goodbye
to the clothing.
I think it's better if I use the whole pieces of clothing because then I have more space to write my memoir.
I also read the repair manifesto by Joanna van der Zanden and
Gabriele Oropallo.

Sharing his skills for those
who need it.
I'm a member of the Facebook group called Amsterdam deelt/geeft (Amsterdam shares/gives), maybe it's an idea to give my pieces of clothing away to people who need it.
I could write a poem for every piece of clothing to give the person who wants to have a certain piece of clothing a view of what that piece of clothing meant for me.
The message that I would like to deliver is how I was affected by the piece of clothing, in an emotional way.
And I would also like to invite the people that get certain pieces of clothing to keep this kind of connection alive.
It's more about the connection
between people.
I was thinking about how I would like to deliver my message instead of just the poem in the Facebook post.
Poems:
The dress for my 18th B'day
Ik werd achttien
Zo volwassen
Dacht ik toen
Het was een goede avond
Maar ik zou hem nooit over doen
Shirt that I wore on my first date when I was 14 y/o
Mijn eerste date
Daar in Amsterdam
Ik was veertien
En wist niet wat me overkwam
Shirt that I got from my mother
Gekregen van mijn moeder
Gekregen van haar moeder
Nu geef ik het door
Hopelijk aan een moeder
A dress that I bought on my worst vacation ever.
We gingen samen weg
Naar een warm land
Niet wetende
Al die vervelende mannen
Op het strand
Nooit meer
This is an example how Viktor and Rolf share their message through clothing.
A REQUIEM
FOR
GARMENTS
I would like to do this in public places such as parks etc. so that I'll have the interaction with people grabbing the pieces of the laundry line. I'll see this more as a conversation piece.
This is just an example of how I would like to do it. I also want to change the name and write the poems in english. So it isn't a mix up of english and dutch.
This will be the new name of the project.
I like the idea of sending my clothes away with a goodbye poem to honor them. But I miss the interaction with people and it could take years to have any kind of interaction with other people.
I would like to display 3 pieces of clothing:
- Shirt that I got from my mother
- Beach dress that I bought on the worst vacation ever
- Shirt that I bought from my first salary
Shirt that was given to me by my mother
and she got it from my grandmother.
Given by my mother
Given by her mother
Now it's my turn
Hopefully I'll pass it across
To a mother
Shirt that I bought from my first salary
I was fourteen
I worked for hours and hours
I felt like a queen
Now it isn't mine anymore
It's ours.
Dress that I bought on the worst vacation ever
We left together
To the beach
All those annoying many men
A figure of speech
I'll miss you like
Bad weather
Dress that I wore on my 16th birthday
There has to be a call to action on the washing line, so that people know that they can take the clothing but that they'll have to share their experiences with me.
Something like:
CLOTHING FOR CONNECTION
CLOTHING FOR EXPERIENCES
SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE FOR
CLOTHING
EVERY GARMENT HAS IT'S OWN MEMORIES, NOW LET'S MAKE NEW ONES.
